Hopefully by now you've heard of the Hendricks County Community Youth Fair that They're Our Kids is co-hosting with Macaroni Kid - Hendricks this Saturday, Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Center in Danville.
Ever since last year's Hendricks County Youth Sports Fair that we hosted together at Danville Community High School was such a big success, we've been talking about hosting a bigger youth fair that encompasses all sorts of organizations, resources and opportunities for Hendricks County youth.
Meghan Stritar of Macaroni Kid - Hendricks was able to secure us the Exposition Hall at the Fairgrounds, and we've spent months since that time planning this event.
With the Hendricks County Community Youth Fair coming up this weekend, I want to let everyone know what we have on tap.
We're going to have over 50 vendors at the Hendricks County Community Youth Fair, filling the Exposition Hall. I think it's a really good blend of resources that will appeal to parents of kids of all ages.
We have several local youth sports organizations returning to the Youth Fair this Saturday, including the Avon Junior Athletic Association (AJAA), 10th Street Sports Center, and the Hendricks Regional Health YMCA. We'll have organizations there representing soccer, karate, basketball, football, cheer, baseball, softball, running, and more.
Several of these organizations will be putting on demonstrations throughout the Youth Fair to display their sport.
Sports fans will also enjoy a visit from the Indiana Pacers Fan Van from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Hendricks County 4-H will have a booth at the Youth Fair, as will the Jameson Camp, the Indianapolis Children's Choir, and several other providers of the arts and other fun activities.
Bookworms won't want to miss the booths of the Brownsburg Public Library, the Danville Public Library or Usborne Books.
In a variety of forums, Meghan and I have heard a lot of parents asking questions about two topics in particular: preschools and orthodontics.
The Hendricks County Community Youth Fair will feature eight vendor booths from local preschools and before- and after-school care facilities throughout the county. Learn about facilities like the Goddard School, ABC's & 123's Learning Centers, Cradles to Crayons and more.
Parents of kids who are a little older and who are entering the scary world of orthodontics will appreciate the booths of Hendricks Pediatric Dentistry and Clark, Dean & Jones Children's Dentistry.
Perhaps you haven't thought of spinal care for kids, but it's an important concern, so we'll have Danville Chiropractic and Spinal Care Physical Medicine at the Youth Fair.
We're also tackling another exceedingly important health issue for OUR KIDS: drug abuse and mental health. Steered Straight - Indiana will have a booth at the fair to provide all sorts of resources about the heroin epidemic that our nation and our own Hendricks County is facing, as well as other drug abuse issues.
The Hendricks County Sheriff's Department will have a booth at the Youth Fair to show off some of their programs that benefit our youth. And speaking of the heroin epidemic, be sure to ask the sheriff deputies about their department's use of Narcan and how it has already saved lives in Hendricks County.
We'll also have booths from Creekside Counseling, Wymore Counseling and Metro Counseling for those who might be interested in exploring some professional help for any of life's issues.
Parents may be interested in learning more about MDwise -- Indiana's largest non-profit healthcare company -- and their health plans such as Indiana Healthwise, Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), Hoosier Care Connect, and MDwise Marketplace. If so, make sure you stop at their booth.
Or perhaps there are folks out there who are interested in starting or expanding their family. For those people, the booths of the Indiana Adoption Program and the Indiana Heart Gallery are can't-miss.
Need clothes, furniture and toys for the kids? Learn about how the Here We Grow Again Consignment Sale can save you a ton of money. Visit their booth for more information.
Don't think that vendor booths are the only component of the Hendricks County Community Youth Fair, though. Meghan put together a nice graphic about some of the activities and demonstrations that we'll have going on throughout the day:
Meghan and I recognized that all of this exploration can make a family hungry, so we're going to have the Bee Hive there with food for purchase, plus you can wet your whistle by purchasing a drink from the local Navigators chapter (Scouting for both genders). Take a load off for a few minutes and enjoy your lunch in the dining area of the Youth Fair.
Oh, and did I mention that the Hendricks County Community Youth Fair is FREE to attend? Yes, FREE. Bring the whole family! Bring the neighbors! Bring friends! Bring everyone! Everybody is FREE!
The forecast for Saturday is for bitter cold, so get the family out of the house, let the kids run off some energy, and explore what's available to Hendricks County youth and families at the Hendricks County Community Youth Fair!
