Wouldn't it be great if there was a place designed for OUR KIDS with special needs to play organized sports on a playing surface that is conducive to all forms of mobility?

Thanks to the Optimist Miracle Movers, such a place is about to exist in Plainfield.

Located at the Al & Jan Barker Sports Complex, 451 S. Vestal Road in Plainfield, the new Optimist Miracle Movers Field is almost completed and is scheduled to open on Sept. 20.

Karen Cravotta, a pediatric physical therapist who coaches swimming through the Optimist Miracle Movers, was our guest speaker today at our Kiwanis Club of Danville meeting, and she enlightened all of us about this multi-year joint project spearheaded by the Town of Plainfield and the Optimist Club of Plainfield.

The Optimist Miracle Movers already offer swimming programs for OUR KIDS with special needs, as well as bowling programs.

Now, with the new Miracle Movers Field being built in Plainfield, they are able to offer softball programs for OUR KIDS ages 5-10 and 11-21 with special needs. Mrs. Cravotta informed us that the field is also being designed so that soccer programs can be offered in the future.

The field has a special surface that allows OUR KIDS with special needs to participate in sports, even when using wheelchairs. Each special needs child is partnered with a buddy -- family, friends or members of the community age 13 and up who wish to volunteer their time -- to aid in the maximum enjoyment of the activity.

Go to the Optimist Miracle Movers website to register your child online for the softball program, but HURRY! Registration closes on Sept. 10, and the season will begin on Sept. 27!

Volunteers Needed

Mrs. Cravotta said that the funding for this field is pretty much set for now, but the Optimist Miracle Movers have a great need for volunteer buddies for OUR KIDS with special needs.

According to their website: "Our volunteers, both students and adults, learn patience, tolerance and the ability of one person to change the life of another. They also learn that by creating an environment void of physical, social and cultural barriers there are NO LIMITS. All student volunteers receive community service hours for their participation."

If you would like to volunteer to be one of OUR KIDS' buddies, please click here to fill out a volunteer registration form.

Your willingness to help means the world to OUR KIDS.
