A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog post for Visit Hendricks County about the new Danville Window Zoo. The Window Zoo went up this week and is now on display on the northwest corner of Jefferson and Main Street in Danville.
After writing the VHC blog post previewing the event, I was curious to see how it turned out, so my daughters and I ventured to the Hendricks County Courthouse Square to check it out.
The basic premise of the event was to turn a cardboard box into a zoo animal. For a fee, you could enter your zoo animal in a contest, or you could just enter one for free for the heck of it.
All of the entries are now on display, including the three winners of the contest.
First place, as it turns out, went to my favorite window zoo animal -- an elephant. I'm terribly biased, being an enormous fan of elephants in real life, but the artwork and color scheme of this particular elephant really drew me to the piece.
Second place went to a cool 3D orangutan in a cage, and third place went to a unicorn, which doubled as my youngest daughter's favorite.
There is a koala, a peacock, a tiger, a zebra and many more neat window zoo animals on display.
My oldest daughter liked the marine scene, on display right under my favorite elephant, the best.
My photos don't really do the artwork justice since 1) I'm not a very good photographer, and 2) I was dealing with sunlight reflecting off the glass window, so you really should see it for yourself.
The Danville Window Zoo will be on display through May 10, so if you're on the Square with the kids for any reason between now and then, be sure to wander across Jefferson Street from the Mayberry Cafe to check it out.
There are a lot of great artists around here!
